WASHINGTON – The Fair Election Fund, a non-partisan public interest organization committed to promoting effective administration of elections in a transparent way that instills public confidence in electoral results, released a groundbreaking report exposing how Microsoft’s political bias, censorship practices, and ties to the Chinese Communist Party threaten free and fair elections in the United States.
Prompted by FTC Chairman Andrew Ferguson’s August 2025 letter warning tech giants against censorship and data security lapses under foreign pressure, the report details Microsoft’s aggressive suppression of conservative voices, partisan election initiatives, and risky national security practices that erode voter trust.
The Fair Election Fund report “reveals a troubling pattern of bias that tilts the scales against conservatives, empowers America’s adversaries, and undermines the integrity of our democratic process. As we work to restore confidence in elections, it’s clear that Microsoft is part of the problem.”
Key findings from the report include:
- Microsoft’s leadership shows clear partisan leanings, with Bill Gates’ $50 million donation to support Kamala Harris in 2024 and LinkedIn co-founder and Microsoft board member Reid Hoffman’s call for President Trump to become an “actual martyr” days before the July assassination attempt.
- The company’s PAC suspended donations to 147 Republicans who objected to the 2020 election certification, while ignoring similar actions by Democrats in past cycles.
- Microsoft’s deep China ties, including source code sharing and use of Chinese engineers for U.S. federal contracts, pose national security risks that could compromise election infrastructure.
- Election programs like “Defending Democracy” risk partisanship due to DNC-linked leadership.
- Partnerships with NewsGuard and the Global Disinformation Index target conservative media, suppressing diverse viewpoints.
- LinkedIn’s content moderation spiked under the Biden Administration, removing hundreds of thousands of posts labeled as “misinformation” or “hate speech,” potentially censoring good-faith conservative discussions.
The Fair Election Fund calls for immediate reforms, including independent audits of Microsoft’s platforms, balanced political contributions, and a review of federal contracts to protect American data from foreign influence.
